About:

Jake Murphy is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and music student at the University of Texas at Austin. They have a vast musical background, having studied jazz bass with Bruno Råberg at Berklee College of Music/Interlochen Academy for Arts and composition with Dr. Martin Blessinger at the Texas Christian University. They've performed with the UT symphony orchestra, UT horn choir, and UT Hispanic Caribbean ensemble.

Jake seeks to push what can be reasonably asked for in the modern horn canon. Their piece titled 'All Bebop, No Cowboy' is a challenging song for horn choir incorporating seldom seen extended techniques, such as stop tongue-ing and half valve glissandos. Additionally, they have a great affinity for tuning theory and microtonality, and their horn concerto 'Masking' tells primarily improvisation driven narrative, with a quartertone piano for accompaniment, that is about their experience as an individual with autism and having to mask in a society they must conform to.
